Kľúčové slová: syndróm vyhorenia, sebaúcta, zmysel pre integritu (sense of coherence), študenti pomáhajúcich profesií.

Abstract:
Background: Research is recently focusing on prevalence of the burnout syndrome not only among adults, but also among students; despite of the fact that study is not a real work; it requires regular mandatory structured activities and expected achievement. Personality characteristics, such as self-evaluation and sense of coherence might be important factors influencing the individual abilities to cope with the burnout. We examined the relationship between mentioned factors among university students of helping professions.
Methods: 75 university students were included: 48 psychology students (mean age 21.1±3.3;29.8 % of males), and 27 students of nursing and public health (19.8±1.7;all females). SBI (School Burnout Inventory) was used for assessing the burnout levels and SOC (Sense of Coherence questionnaire) was also employed. Linear regression models were used.
Results: After controlling for the effect of age and gender; burnout syndrome was significantly predicted only by sense of coherence (β= -0.35; 95 % CI: -0.45,-0.32), but not by self-esteem (β= -0.05; 95% CI: -0.65,0.46).
Conclusions: It is probable, that strategies of coping with study requirements will be significantly associated with the coping strategies later applied at work; and thus improving stress managing competences among students will be useful in prevention of later burnout syndrome onset.
Key words: burnout syndrome, self-esteem, sense of coherence, students of helping professions.
