HEXACO Personality Traits as Predictors of Humor Styles in the Healthcare Context
Abstrakt: Cieľom tejto štúdie bolo preskúmať vzťahy medzi osobnostnými črtami modelu HEXACO a štýlmi humoru v kontexte zdravotníckej komunikácie, s dôrazom na interakciu medzi zubnými lekármi a pacientmi.
Výskumný súbor tvorilo 204 participantov (103 zubných lekárov a 101 pacientov), ktorí vyplnili dotazníky HEXACO-60 a Humor Styles Questionnaire. Dáta boli analyzované pomocou komparačnej a hierarchickej regresnej analýzy.
Výsledky komparačnej analýzy ukázali, že zubní lekári dosahovali signifikantne vyššie skóre v afiliatívnom humore, extraverzii a svedomitosti, zatiaľ čo pacienti vykazovali vyššie skóre v sebaponižujúcom humore. Regresná analýza preukázala, že extraverzia predstavuje robustný prediktor adaptívnych foriem humoru (afiliatívny a sebaposilňujúci), zatiaľ čo agresívny humor bol konzistentne negatívne spojený s prívetivosťou a poctivosťou–pokorou. Sebaponižujúci humor vykazoval pozitívny vzťah s prívetivosťou a negatívny so svedomitosťou.

Abstract: The aim of this study was to examine the relationships between HEXACO personality traits and humor styles in the context of healthcare communication, with a particular focus on interactions between dentists and patients. Despite the growing interest in the role of humor in healthcare, the mechanisms through which personality characteristics influence the use of humor in asymmetrical interactions remain insufficiently understood. The originality of the study lies in examining these relationships within the specific population of dentists and their patients, a context that has received only limited attention in previous research.
The research sample consisted of 204 participants (103 dentists and 101 patients) who completed the HEXACO-60 and the Humor Styles Questionnaire (HSQ). Data were analyzed using comparative and hierarchical regression analyses.
The comparative analysis revealed that dentists scored significantly higher in affiliative humor, extraversion, and conscientiousness, whereas patients reported significantly higher levels of self-defeating humor. Hierarchical regression analyses demonstrated that extraversion was a robust predictor of adaptive humor styles (affiliative and self-enhancing), whereas aggressive humor was consistently negatively associated with agreeableness and honesty–humility. Self-defeating humor was positively associated with agreeableness and negatively associated with conscientiousness. The regression models indicated that personality traits explained a substantial proportion of the variance in humor styles, particularly in affiliative humor.
This study extends the existing literature by applying the HEXACO model to the underexplored field of healthcare communication and highlights the importance of personality-based communication strategies in dentist–patient interactions. The findings have practical implications for the education of healthcare professionals, the development of communication skills, and the promotion of effective interpersonal communication in clinical practice.
