The Crisis of Trust in Media and News Consumption Habits Among the Youth as a Challenge for Media Literacy Education
Prostredníctvom systematického prehľadu odbornej literatúry a aktuálnych prieskumných dát štúdia syntetizuje poznatky z psychológie, mediálnych štúdií a pedagogiky s cieľom vybudovať teoretický základ pre cielené vzdelávacie intervencie.

Abstract: The current media environment in Slovakia is facing a historic decline in overall trust in traditional news (23%), with social media becoming the primary information channel for older adolescents and university students aged 18–24 (36.4%). This situation is often misinterpreted as a complete loss of contact with reality. However, this review-conceptual article with a pedagogical proposal argues (thesis) that the apparent failure of university students is not a result of an absence of critical thinking, but a manifestation of a specific hybrid form of epistemic vigilance (Sperber and Mercier), which is modulated by the digital environment, social networks, and identity. Through a systematic review of professional literature and current survey data, the study synthesizes knowledge from psychology, media studies, and pedagogy to build a theoretical foundation for targeted educational interventions. The article connects cognitive theories with modern expert information verification strategies, such as lateral reading (Wineburg and McGrew). The result of the theoretical synthesis is the proposal of an original participatory pedagogical model for the university environment (based on the principle of students as epistemic agents). This model utilizes peer-to-peer education, co-design, and appeals to students' prosocial values and community responsibility. In the discussion, the work also reflects on current technological and social limitations, such as the rise of generative artificial intelligence (AI), information overload, and risks threatening the digital security of students in the online space.
